Symbolic Background of the Ingredients

The Wise Men presented the Christ child with three precious gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Each gift held a special meaning and pointed to an important aspect of Christ’s identity and mission.

Gold

Gold was a gift traditionally reserved for kings. It represented royalty, honor, great worth, and sovereignty. Presented to the Christ child, it symbolized His divine kingship and acknowledged Him as the King of Kings.

Frankincense

Frankincense was used anciently by the Hebrews in several significant ways. Three uses that are especially symbolic in relation to the baby Jesus were its inclusion in the Minhah, or meal offering; its use with sacrificial offerings; and its use in a medicinal potion.

The Minhah, meaning “meal offering,” included an offering of pure frankincense as well as an offering of the “first fruits.” Frankincense was also burned in connection with animal sacrifice. Because of its sacred fragrance and association with worship, incense became a symbol of the Divine name (Malachi 1:11; Song of Solomon 1:3).

According to the Talmud, frankincense was also used in an anesthetic potion given to prisoners condemned to die to help dull the pain of execution. This adds another thought-provoking layer to the gift of frankincense presented to the Christ child.

How Frankincense Is Processed

The way frankincense is produced is equally meaningful. Frankincense is gathered from the Boswellia tree, which has the remarkable ability to grow in extremely inhospitable environments—even appearing to grow directly from solid rock.

When growing in these harsh conditions, the tree may form a bulbous, disk-like swelling at the base of its trunk. This helps anchor it to the rock and prevents it from being torn away during the violent storms that frequently sweep through the region.

Frankincense resin is collected by carefully cutting the tree’s bark, causing it to “bleed” resin. The resin gradually hardens into droplets traditionally known as “tears.” These frankincense tears are then steam-distilled to produce the pure essential oil used in our handcrafted soap.

Myrrh

During the time of Christ, myrrh was one of the most highly valued commodities in trade. Its name is translated as “bitter” or “was bitter.”

Myrrh was often used alongside frankincense in temple worship and was included in sacred anointing oil used to anoint the Tabernacle, its furnishings, and the priests. Myrrh was also used in preparing the dead for burial, giving it a powerful symbolic connection to Christ’s future suffering, death, and burial.

Myrrh is collected in much the same way as frankincense. The bark of the myrrh tree is carefully pierced through to the sapwood, causing it to “bleed” a gum resin that quickly hardens and becomes glossy. The hardened resin is then steam-distilled to produce the pure myrrh essential oil used in our soap.

Together, gold, frankincense, and myrrh carry profound symbolism connected to Christ’s divinity, sacrifice, suffering, and mortality—making this premium soap bar an especially meaningful addition to the Christmas season.
